As Chair of the Education of Lawyers Board of the Virginia State Bar, I had the distinct honor of presenting the prestigious Rakes Award to my friend and esteemed colleague, Kevin Martingayle, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to legal education in Virginia. This annual award is a testament to the highest leadership, vision, and professionalism standards within our legal community.

The Education of Lawyers Section was formed by uniting the work of the former Committee on Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar with the contributions of the two Conclaves on the Education of Lawyers in Virginia. I've had the honor of serving as the Chair of the board since 2023.

Legal education begins in law school, moves through a period dominated by bar review courses and bar exams, and continues through all stages of a lawyer's professional life. This section, the first of its kind in the country, brings together law deans and professors, judiciary members, and practicing lawyers to improve every phase of legal education in Virginia.

A Meaningful Family Moment

The ceremony was made even more special by the presence of Kevin’s son, Jackson, who is currently a student in my professional liability law class at the University of Virginia. My son Daniel also attended, making it a memorable occasion for both families. Jackson’s dedication and character truly reflect his father’s legacy, proof that the apple does not fall far from the tree.

What Makes the Rakes Award a Big Deal?

The Rakes Award is one of the most significant honors in Virginia’s legal profession, recognizing individuals who:

  • Demonstrate exceptional leadership and vision by developing and implementing innovative concepts to improve legal education and foster professionalism among the academy, the bench, and the bar.

  • Make significant contributions to:

    • Advancing legal education in Virginia, both at law schools and throughout a lawyer’s career.

    • Enhancing communication, cooperation, and meaningful collaboration among the three key constituencies of the legal profession.

Bill Rakes and Kevin Martingayle embody these criteria, setting a high bar for excellence and service in legal education.

Why it Matters

Recognizing leaders like Kevin Martingayle not only honors their achievements but also inspires the next generation of legal professionals to strive for innovation, collaboration, and lifelong learning within the legal field. The Rakes Award serves as a reminder of the profound impact that visionary leadership can have on the future of legal education in Virginia and beyond.
